HISTORY OF THE ITEP DEPARTMENT
The journey of the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) at Kiang Nangbah Government College (KNGC), Jowai, began on April 18, 2017, with the government appointing Shri Subrata De, then HoD of Physics at KNGC, as the first Principal of B.Ed. College, Mynthong, Jowai. The college became operational on the same day.
On December 6, 2018, the Government of Meghalaya notified the amalgamation of B.Ed. College, Mynthong with Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai thereby qualifying it as a multidisciplinary institution eligible to apply for ITEP.
The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) granted provisional affiliation to KNGC on October 16, 2020, for the B.A.B.Ed and B.Sc.B.Ed programmes at the secondary stage. Finally on March 3, 2023, KNGC, Jowai, gets approval from NCTE, New Delhi to run the ITEP of B.A.B.Ed and B.Sc.B.Ed of one unit each from the academic year 2023-2024. KNGC was among the 42 institutions across India recognized in the first pilot phase of this NCTE initiative and is proud to be the first institution in Meghalaya to offer this transformative teacher education programme.
KNGC Admission to ITEP is through the National Common Entrance Test (NCET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Candidates must select KNGC, Jowai, as their preferred choice in their online application form.
Internal Admission process was completed by October 5, 2023, and the induction programme for the selected candidates of the first batch was held on October 12, 2023.
The syllabus designed by NCTE got approved in toto by the North Eastern Hill University for implementation from the session 2023-2024. The official inauguration of the ITEP programme took place on September 17, 2024, by Shri Rakkam A Sangma, Honourable Minister of Education, Government of Meghalaya.
To support the effective launch of the programme, a hand-holding session was organized in collaboration with NCTE on October 18, 2023, at the KNGC Multi-purpose Hall. It was attended by all faculty members of the college, where Prof. R.C. Patel from the NCTE curriculum core committee as the expert and Prof. C. Nongbri from North-Eastern Hill University as moderator.
ITEP is a four-year integrated programme combining disciplinary and teaching professional education course. It offers dual degrees - B.A.B.Ed or B.Sc.B.Ed and incorporates multidisciplinary learning, Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC), and Value Added Courses (VAC), in alignment with NEP 2020, for all round development and competent of future educators.
The department is supported by qualified and dedicated faculty members who provide academic and personal guidance to student-teachers throughout their course of study. Currently, the ITEP department hosts two batches: the first batch (2023-2027) is in the fourth semester, while the second batch (2024-2028) is in the second semester.
